Our Year of the Party
by Judy Sullivan,
author of Size Wise, the great plus size resource guide

We've been hearing Prince tell us since 1982 about partying like it's 1999. Well, here it is folks. 1999. Are you ready to party? Have you become a bit of a hermit because you aren't comfortable in most social situations? It's time to remedy that.

One of the most positive aspects of the size acceptance movement has been the formation of dozens of organizations around the world dedicated to providing social gatherings of all sorts for people of size. If you live in a big city, chances are there is a group of people looking forward to having you join them for dances, pool parties, picnics, theater outings, and even cruises. If there isn't a size-positive social group in your area, perhaps you should consider getting the ball rolling by starting one yourself.

Dressing Up

No matter what your size, you can now attend social functions dressed beautifully. Check with these stores to find just the dress that makes you feel beautiful, then party in style.

Designer at Heart (Phone: 800 462-4889) will create an elegant handcrafted gown for you. Megan Moser-Rosenhart's custom designs are available in a wide variety of fabrics and can be made in any size.

You just can't beat the fantasy wear available from Gypsy Moon. If you're in the mood for romantic, swirling skirts, delicious lace shawls, and flowing dresses, this is the spot for you. There are even items for men. The "bountiful" size fits up to 48" bust, 48" waist, and 52" hips, with custom sizes available. (Given the opportunity, I would happily live in these clothes.)

Absinthe and Old Lace (319 E. Liberty #2, Wooster, OH 44691 Phone: 330 262-4384) specializes in corsetry, costumes, and custom clothing in large sizes.

Hilo Hattie (700 N. Nimitz Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817. There are 5 other locations. Phone: 808 544-3500 or 800 272-5282 Email: hhhawaii@hilohattie.com) has a beautiful selection of Hawaiian print wear, including muu muus, sundresses, and shirts. These will be a real hit for pool and spa parties. Visit their website for more information or to make purchases through their online store. Sizes run small through 5XL.

Add just the right touch of sparkle with Plus Size Rhinestone Jewelry. (P.O. Box 2028, New York, NY 10159-2028 Phone: 800 299-2185) has a lovely selection of 8" bracelets, 20" and 21" necklace sets, 17" chokers, and a tummybelt that is adjustable to 36" waists. You can also purchase a necklace extender through them. Visit their web site to see some samples of their work.

Comfy Under It All

It's hard to feel beautiful when you are uncomfortable. Consider these solutions.

Ladies, you have got to check this company out. Heaven Sent Resources. 22 Tanner St, Tauranga, New Zealand, Phone: 64-7-571 1444) is busy designing and producing clothing that helps with problems associated with larger figures. The Walkeasy completely eliminates inner leg chafing and stocking pilling. The strapless camisole eliminates falling camisole straps. A nightdress helps prevent underbreast chafing, plus it makes a lovely maternity nightdress. The sizes range from 10 to 34 and larger if requested. About 30 more designs are in the works and will soon be available. Drop by their web site to meet the folks from Heaven Sent Resources and to see some of their products.

Roaman's offers a “Pantliner with triple paneling to control tummy; double paneling to trim hips and derriere. Memory Stretch fabric of nylon/Lycra spandex provides support and control. Stretch lace hose-gripper cuffs; cotton-lined crotch, USA. Fits hips 8" larger than waist. Colors: White, Black Item No. 517 3300-5-LD Even waists 30-34" $28.99 Even waists 36-48" $30.99 (buy 2, subtract 50 cents each).” These pantliners look from the photo as if they stop mid calf.

Stepping Out

One of the most active social organizations is Z-Women of Salt Lake City, Utah. You will never be at a loss for things to do if you join up with this group of wonderful, friendly people. From dances to nature walks and fashion shows to vacations, Z-Women's director, Janet Littlejohn, never seems at a loss for ideas. If you don't live in Utah and there are no size-positive social groups in your area, consider starting a Z-Women group. For more information, send email to zwomen@mailexcite.com.

Check the Size Wise web site for information about other social groups in Alhambra, Laguna Niguel, Los Angeles, Reseda, Sacramento, and San Leandro, California; Washington, DC; Atlanta, Georgia; Kissimme, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas; Laurel, Maryland; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Jackson, New Jersey; New York, New York; North and South Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Houston, Texas; Toronto and Montreal, Canada. Other groups are added as they become known to me.

Getting a Little Wild

One last suggestion. Want to be the life of the party? Get really brave and take up belly dancing. Belly Dance! (1235 Boulevard Way, Walnut Creek, CA 94595 Phone: 510 937- 7852) carries everything for the belly dancer. You can make your own costume from a nice selection of patterns or order one custom made.

FatChanceBellyDance (FCBD-RAD, P.O. Box 460594, San Francisco, CA 94146 Phone: 415 647-6035) offers classes in Berkeley, California. Send a SASE for a catalog of videos, music, costumes, and accessories. Hey! If you've got it, flaunt it! And let's all make this a great year to remember!

Summer
by Judy Sullivan,
author of Size Wise, the great plus size resource guide

What do you have planned for the summer? I know you aren't going to let your size keep you from getting out and enjoying the beautiful sunshine and family activities. Dress comfortably, look great, plan ahead, and have a good time! I have lots of ideas and resources for you, so let's jump right in.

Theme Parks

I get lots of email from people considering going to one of the many theme parks around the world. The question most often asked is “Will I fit into the rides?” People are also concerned about having to walk long distances and stand in seemingly endless lines.

Plan these outings carefully for relaxation and optimal enjoyment. Call ahead and ask for a park brochure and map. Also ask for any information normally offered to handicapped users. This sort of information will let you know where easy access gates, park seating, and rest stops are located. Ask if the park has a list of their rides, the type of seating on each ride, and any size and weight limits.

If you are planning on going to Walt Disney World in Florida, surf on over to Deb's Unofficial Walt Disney World Information Guide, http://wdwig.com/ridsiz.htm web site. Click on the Theme Parks tab and scroll down to the WDW At Large link. This is a wonderful listing of each ride and attraction at the park and what you can expect by way of seating on each.

Most parks have wheelchairs or motorized carts available to rent at the entrance gate. If walking for hours or standing in lines is a problem for you, take advantage of these perks and get more enjoyment from your visit. If this is an option you don't feel is necessary but you still want a little extra comfort available for you, consider purchasing a lightweight portable folding chair.

With a little advance planning there is no reason you can't join family and friends and have a great time at an amusement park.

Portable Chairs

Don't you just hate what passes for outdoor furniture lately? What is with those plastic molded seats. I swear they look like they came right out of Barbie's Summer Beach House of Tiny Plastic People. Maybe you can squeeze your ample hips into them, but I can't without losing circulation. Purchase your own seating and take it along with you.

QVC, the shopping network, sells the What-A-Chair. Rated to hold up to 350 lbs, this chair comes with a convenient carrying case and costs approximately $35. There is a double version that is rated to support 450 lbs. This chair can also be purchased through their web site. (www.qvc.com)

If you live near a Costco store, they sell a director's chair that costs approximately $25. It is reportably quite comfortable and is sturdy enough to support up to 450 pounds.

Service Merchandise carries a folding canvas chair made by the Coleman Company that is perfect for any outdoor event. This chair costs approximately $40. The catalog number is C025718RRA.

On the look-out for a lawn chair that accommodates ample hips? If you have a HomeBase in your area, you're in luck. They carry a lawn chair with an adjustable hi-back and pull-out ottoman. This white plastic chair is sturdy and fits even supersize individuals. Ask for the Bayport Stacking Lounger, Syroco #62207, Ref-4073-W7. Approximate cost is $50.

Camping Comfort

If you're the adventurous sort and are about to wander out into the woods in search of a little communing with Mother Nature, you might want to take along an air mattress to make that visit more restful. Be sure and find a mattress that is thick and has durable seams. You might ask for the brand name Avid Outdoor. They make some relatively strong and inexpensive versions that are rated to hold anywhere from 250 lbs. (single) to 600 lbs. (king and queen size). Approximate cost: $15 (queen).

Airline Seating

If you are thinking of flying somewhere this summer and are dreading facing those disgustingly narrow airline seats, have no fear. Talk to your travel agent and ask them to get a copy of The Airline Seating Guide, published by Carlson Publishing. This book lists the measurements of every seat on every airplane. It can be purchased through any book store.

Clothing

There are some wonderful web sites for ordering summer clothing. For swimsuits, shorts, t-shirts, and other casual summer wear, check out Big on Batik (bigonbatik.com/), and my personal favorite, Junonia.

Have a  GREAT summer !!

Winter Shopping Tips ... from Size Wise
by Judy Sullivan,
author of Size Wise, the great plus size resource guide

The weatherman says we're in for a wild winter, thanks to the effects of El Niño. More rain for those of us on the west coast; lots of snow and wind for the rest of you. Time to do a little shopping!

Move Quickly For Great Savings
First, a bit of sad news regarding one of my favorite stores. Sally's Place (PO Box 1397, Sausalito, CA 94966 Phone: 415 898-LOVE Email: Sally94966@aol.com) is going out of business. Here's your chance to make some excellent buys on a wide selection of lingerie, gowns, sweat pants and shirts, terry robes, body suits, leotards, and jewelry - all at 40% to 60% off. Some items run to size 10X. I truly hate to see this business close. The selection they offer is delightful, fun, sexy, and, sometimes, a bit wicked. Call them soon to take advantage of these tremendous savings.

Medical Uniforms With Smiles
If you work in the medical community and are looking for some very cool uniforms to warm up winter, check out S.C.R.U.B.S. (8665 Argent Street, Santee, CA 92071-4182 Phone: 800 231- 5965). They carry dresses, tops, jackets, boxer shorts and much more and are available in sizes XS through 4XL. From adorable playful penguins, angel bears, cats, dogs, and horses to Hawaiian prints and flowers, you will find prints guaranteed to bring smiles. Check out a sampling on the Size Wise site.

Holiday Dress Up
With the holiday season upon us, we have a rush of social gatherings giving us plenty of great excuses for indulging in some elegant fashions. Prepare to be lured under the mistletoe in December and swept away for a romantic Valentine's evening when you dress in one of the fabulous lacy, romantic dresses or tunics from Sandi Kent (612A Venice Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291 Phone: 310 574-3164). Sizes run to a roomy 3X.

Get Cozy!
Sweeter Measures (P.O. Box 340, Gibbon, NE 68840-034C Phone 308 468-5156) has a very nice clothing line for ladies up to size 8X. They make everything from cozy lounge wear to warm, comfortable jackets and coats. Contact them for a catalog and some fabric swatches.

Warm Up Those Feet!
The warmest, softest slippers I have ever owned are a pair from Aussie Connection (825 N.E. Broadway, Portland, OR 97232 Phone: 503 284-2228 or 800 950-2668). These fleece sheepskin slippers will keep your toes warm all winter. They are made for both men and women and come in sizes up to 15. Aussie Connection also carries boots and scuffs.

Buy Yourself A Present
Can you remember just how many New Year's resolutions you have made to lose weight? Let's see . . . for me it has been about twenty. Of course, each December found me just as big as the previous year. Let's try a new one this year . . . improved health and vitality at any size.

I always heartily recommend the book Great Shape: The First Fitness Guide For Large Women by Pat Lyons and Debby Burgard. This is the best present you can give yourself or a friend this year. No matter what sport or activity you want to participate in, the great advice offered by these women will help get you going. (A note from your webmistress: Check out Pat Lyon's great article in the Grand Style Spa. You can also order Pat and Debby's book from the Grand Style Book Store.

If you enjoy tapes to exercise to, consider Mara Nesbitt's (P.O. Box 19141, Portland, OR 97219 Email: nesbitt@hevanet.com) video tape, "Yoga For Large Bodies." Mara is a licensed massage therapist who has also been teaching yoga techniques for large people since 1983. Visit her website for more information.

If you can ignore the lose weight mantra, Richard Simmons' Sweatin' to the Oldies tapes are the best around for a good aerobic workout. They can be purchased here at the Grand Style Books Store Fitness Section. Just remember, despite what Richard says, this isn't about weight loss, it's about good health. And we wish the best to you for 1998!

Fall is Here ... Time to Shop for School Clothes
by Judy Sullivan,
author of Size Wise, the great plus size resource guide

While the large-sized women's fashion industry is growing at a fantastic rate, options for clothing for big kids seem pretty stagnant. At a time when an estimated 33% of our kids are larger than average, this is perplexing. Most parents just give up and either sew their kids' clothing or buy adult sizes. Not many parents have time to sew anymore and adult clothing, while big enough to cover, really isn't a great solution. It's no wonder people look at a fat kid wearing a shirt with shoulder seams halfway to his elbow and jeans hanging down over his shoes and think "sloppy." While this may be a look some kids go for now, it really isn't the fashion statement most want to make.

Kids have a need to fit in, even more than adults. The further from the "norm" kids are in body size, the more they will be teased and ostracized. As parents, we can do a lot for our kids by seeing to it they have clothing that looks like what their peers are wearing. If you can't find cool clothes for your children, let your favorite stores know what you need. This is not your child's fault for being "too big," it is the fault of the stores and manufacturers for not providing alternatives for bigger kids.

Stores For Kids Clothes

Target stores only carry girls school uniforms, jeans, and shorts in sizes up to 16-1/2. Both K-Mart and Walmart representatives said their stores carry a few half-size girls swimsuits during the summer but no plus sizes in other clothing. All three stores carry husky Wrangler jeans that fit up to a 34" waist.

The JCPenney catalog (800) 222-6161 carries boys husky sizes up to 36W (fit up to a 40" chest, 41" hips and extended student sizes up to 36 (fit up to a 41 1/2" chest, 42 1/2" hips). Their girls sizes run up to a 20 1/2 (fits up to 40" chest, 43" hips). They also carry Lee jeans for girls up to a size 18 1/2, tights and pantyhose to a size 18.

Unlimited Options specializes in custom-made clothing. Anything you want in any size you need. While not specifically for kids, they will work up any look your child wants. They offer a video catalog which will cost $5, but that amount is applied to your first order. Write to them at 131 North Beaumont Avenue, Burlington, NC 27217 or call (800) 922-0480.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and Johnni's Treasures can provide your kids (and yourself) with wonderful costumes in any size. Write to 762 Elochoman Valley, Cathlamet, WA 98612 or call (360) 795-3946.

Teenage Girls

Do your girls love to look through the teen fashion magazines but you are dismayed at the lack of positive images for girls over size 6? Seventeen Magazine, probably the most popular in the teen market, has recently added a column titled "Sizewise." This monthly forum discusses size 14+ fashions and has a question/answer section written by a plus size model. A step in the right direction. Seventeen is available at stores throughout the country.

BBW Magazine also has a column for bigger girls, "Teen Mix." This column covers fashions and all sorts of teen issues. For instance, the September '97 column talked about dancing. Each month a different teen is profiled. Call (800) 707-5592 for a subscription or check magazine stands for a copy.

This is the kind of stuff our girls need to see . . . other plus-sized teens facing the same issues they face, dealing with them effectively and being happier for the effort.

Warm Clothes For Us Big Kids

Are you aware that the only part of the fashion industry experiencing a boom is the plus-size women's market? While most of it is geared at the 16 to 32 size women, many companies design for super-size women also. And it's about time. Check out some of these items to add some snuggly warmth to the coming cool months.

The Richman Cotton Company stocks 100% pure cotton long johns, shirts, sweats and parkas in sizes up to 4X. 2631 Piner Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401 or call (800) 992-8924.

The flannel nightgowns ("like a hug you can wear") from Laughing Sisters are so wonderful you'll find yourself turning down invitations to go out just so you can stay home and lounge around in them. Sizes run from 14 through 36 with custom sizes available. Write to this company at 4514 Manitou Way, San Diego, CA 92117 or call (619) 272-1976.

Contact the Rainy County Knit Wear company for beautiful sweaters and vests in wool, mohair, acrylic, or cotton in literally any size you need. Write PO Box 7852, Everett, WA 98201-0852 or call (206) 653-7189.

Estar Fashions Plus makes natural fiber jackets and coats up to size 5X. Write to them at 5765 Arapahoe Road, Suite B, Boulder, CO 80303-1361 or call (800) 967-8953.

For these and hundreds of other resources that will help keep you happy, beautiful, and healthy, visit the the Size Wise website.

Enjoy some long walks in the brisk fall air and kick through some leaves. Cuddle up in front of a fireplace, sip some hot herbal tea, and read a good book. Fall is a terrific time of the year (my favorite!) and you deserve the best.

This summer, with the help of the right resources, you can be out participating in anything that catches your fancy and looking terrific while doing so.
