If you’ve ever worn a plus size sports bra, you know how difficult it is to get it on and off. Reaching, stretching, twisting … and then, finally, it’s on. But the adventure continues because now you have to deal with your breasts being compressed beyond the comfort level. And then, when you want to take it off, you have to go through all the reaching, stretching and twisting all over again!

Finally, a comfortable plus size sports bra!

There seems to be more wide calf boots available this year; but, I’m not sure that they really have a “plus size calf.” Some of these plus size calf boots are only an inch wider — certainly not wide enough to fit my shapely leg. Boots can be expensive. And, it’s expensive to ship them back to the retailer if they don’t fit. Before you buy that next pair of boots, here are a few tips that I follow:

1. Measure your calf – Measure the widest part of your calf. If you don’t have a tape measure, pull a belt or other non-stretching item like a piece of paper around your calf. Note the width of your calf and then check the length against a ruler or yardstick.

2. Get the measurement of the boot in your size before you buy – The calf measurement given with the boot is usually for the smallest size. Ask the customer service rep for the calf width of the size you want to buy. If they don’t know the width for your size, they will probably be able to tell you the width of the largest size.

3. Consider buying a wide width boot even if you wear a medium width shoe - The calf measurements are often wider on a wide calf boot.

4. If the boot calf is too snug, take them to a shoe repair store - Ask if they can put in an elastic gusset on the inside seam. Tip: Save your boot receipt in case the shoe repair can’t widen the style you have chosen.

5. Have one pair of classic-styled, low heel boots – They will be your best friend in bad weather.

6. Don’t be afraid of buying inexpensive boots - I’d rather spend my “boot budget” on several pairs of boots in fun colors than only buy one pair of black boots. The inexpensive boots may not last as long, but I can replace them inexpensively. I particularly recommend Lane Bryant and Roamans as great sources for wide width boots. I have many of their inexpensive leather boots in my closet – and I love them.

Woman Within has just introduced a new concept for a full figure bra - a side-wire bra. I’ve tried it and I’m usually not a big fan of underwires. But this new design is really comfortable.

It gives the support of an underwire; but, without the discomfort. This is really a smart design – no more center wire. The underwire starts midway under your breast and continues up the side. And, for extra support and contouring, there are firm pads that run from the bottom of the strap and under the arm. I find that the pads add to the support and reduce the pull on the straps.
