Surviving Plus Size Holiday Activities: How to Thrive!

Whether you are ready or not, the holiday season comes every year! Enjoy your plus size holiday activities. This is no time to let your dress or shirt size get in the way of enjoying times with your friends and family.

Plus Size Holiday Activities: Survival Tips

Here are five tips to help you keep your positive body image, your own individual grand style, your holiday spirit — and to thrive throughout the season!

Tip #1: Don’t give up participating in an activity just because of your size.

  • Hire a neighborhood kid (or your nephew!) to hang your holiday house lights or to stand on the ladder and finish off your inside decorating.
  • Make airline travel more comfortable for your rounder tummy and hips by selecting a big plane that is flown by a size-friendly airline. Also be sure to check out the airplane seating charts on seatguru.com, reserve an aisle seat and take your own seat belt extender.
  • Don’t avoid holiday pictures, either formal portraits or informal photos. Remember: Photos capture the memories. You sure don’t want to be without the memories ten years from now just because you thought you have too many chins this year!
  • Go to all the parties and gatherings. For informal get-togethers, Avenue and Catherines are great sources for reasonably-priced, holiday separates. Need a party outfit? You don’t have to spend a mint. “Holiday-up” your black slacks or suit with a red satin blouse or a crisp white blouse with some great braid or velvet ribbon from the sewing counter tied around your waist.
  • For a little more formality, consider adding a gold or silver scarf or pin to a red or black dress. Check out Ulla Popken or Kiyonna for dresses that look great now and for your after-holiday needs. Add a pair of velvet or metallic flats from Wal-mart or Target for less than $15.

Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to create memories that incorporate your personal sense of style.

  • Put a little confetti in your holiday cards.
  • Bake dog and cat treats for gifts for your neighbors (holiday magazines have the recipes).
  • Give indulgence balls as hostess or office gifts. Just fill craft store mesh ornaments with a scented tea candle, a few Hershey kisses, a bubble bath capsule, a tiny sachet pillow, a pair of dice, a few stickers or a gift certificate for ice cream or a cup of coffee or a hamburger.

Tip #3: It’s hard to show your style when you are stressed out.

  • Avoid the malls. Go once to see the decorations and to get into the spirit. Then, come home slip off your shoes and shop online. For extra time and postage savings: Have your selections gift wrapped and shipped directly to your family and friends.
  • Set practical objectives for family gatherings. You can’t solve 20 years of family problems in one afternoon. When your sister harasses you about weight, tell her “Thanks” and change the subject.
  • Don’t wait until January to get your stressed body moving. Start walking today. Put your favorite tunes on the iPod and walk … don’t stroll … around the block, around the mall or in place in front of your TV – but walk.

Tip #4: Give. It’s the best medicine for the hurting heart or the sad soul.

  • Drop off a card or a little surprise at an elderly neighbor’s door.
  • Offer to baby sit while a young mother or couple finish their holiday preparations.
  • Buy a new toy or drop off a warm coat for the women’s shelter.

Tip #5: Use the after holiday sales to your best advantage.

  • Use common sense. Remember: If it didn’t look good on you when it was full price, it’s not going to look any better when it’s half price.
  • Buying on sale lets you purchase clothes that may be a little better made than you usually buy; but, for a lot less money the regular price.
  • Treat your grand style to an item or a color that you truly love but that that you would usually not purchase at full price. Let your style shine through the holidays.

Happy Holidays!

Extended Wide Calf Boots

Where to Buy Extended Wide Calf Boots

Looking for extended wide calf boots? Most wide calf boots are only about an inch larger than other boots, fitting calf widths of 16″ for a size 6M boot. Widths on larger-sized boots (such as a 12W) may be up to 18″ wide. But, if your calf measures over 17″ you need extended wide calf boots.

Extended wide calf boots come in calf widths from:

  • a 17″ calf on a size 6M boot to a 20″ calf for a size 13WW
  • a 18″ calf on a size 6M boot to a 24″ calf for a size 13WW

Need some measurement help? WideWidths.com provides an easy to use measuring tool to help you figure out what calf width boot you should be wearing.

Retailers for Extended Wide Calf Boots

Not all retailers that sell wide width boots sell wide calf boots. They may offer a size 8C boot; but, unless it is sold as a “wide calf” boot, the boot’s shaft is typically only about 15″ wide.

WideWidths.com

WideWidths.com has the largest selection of women’s wide calf, extra wide calf, super wide calf and super plus wide calf boots. They offer sizes 5M through 13WW. Their selection includes leather boots in prices from $200 to $300. Watch for their sales prices and their occasional site-wide discounts of up to 25%. They also have a fun selection of rain boots. They provide $15.95 flat rate UPS ground shipping for the first pair and $8 for each additional pair.

WideWidths.com offers several top sellers including the Sydney Super Plus Wide Calf Ladies Boot Black Goat Suede/Patent and the Brora Super Wide Calf Ladies Boot Black Nappa/Suede, each about $300.

Shoes.com

Shoes.com (formerly ShoeBuy.com) carries many brand-name leather boots in extended widths. Prices range from $180 to $200. They provide free shipping on all orders.

Shoebuy offers many styles including the David Tate Best-20 for about $200. It has a 20.5″ shaft circumference in size 6 and expands 3/8″ with each size increase.

Amazon.com

Looking for more sources for stylish, comfortable boots in extra wide widths? Measure your calf and shop the various styles, fabrications and colors offered through Amazon. For a stylish boot at a low price check out the Journee Collection Womens Regular Sized, Wide-Calf and Extra Wide-Calf Studded Knee-High Riding Boot for under $50. For an extra toasty cold weather boot check out DREAM PAIRS Women’s Winter Fully Fur Lined Zipper Closure Snow Knee High Boots (Wide-Calf) also for under $50.

Can’t Find Extended Wide Calf Boots You Like?

You can buy a smaller calf boot and have the too-tight shaft enlarged. Have a shoemaker add a piece of elastic next to the zipper on the inner calf. This is a good option if you find a great pair of boots for a great price but they are just a little too snug in the calf.

Big and Tall Recliner: Shopping Tips

Shopping for a big and tall recliner with extra width, extra length and lots of stability can be difficult:

  • Weight Capacity – Some retailers only sell recliners designed to hold a person who weighs 250 pounds or less.
  • Description – Some recliners may be sold as “oversized;” but, this adjective only refers to the seat width, not the weight capacity or the fully-reclined length.
  • Length – Some recliners may hold more weight; but, a tall person will also need a recliner that has a taller back and a longer length when fully reclined.
  • Delivery Time – Some retailers can order a sturdy recliner designed to hold someone who weighs up to 500 pounds; however, they require a special order that may take months to deliver.

Several of the big name recliner companies are now making and stocking recliners which are perfect for the larger or taller person. Prices tend to be cheaper online; so, our editors recommend checking the recliners out in a retail store environment and then ordering your recliner online.

Big and Tall Recliner: Features to Look For

Recliners are sold with a very long list of features. To make your shopping easier, here are the basic features to look for:

  • Weight Capacity – Look for a capacity that exceeds the weight of the largest person in the household. This will make sure that the recliner is sturdy enough to support children and pets who may also pile on.
  • Seat Width – At least 21 inches.
  • Seat Height – At least 18 inches.
  • Length – For a tall person, the back height should be at least 45 inches and the fully reclined length should be at least 75 inches.
  • Seating Positions – At least three – upright, slightly reclined with leg support and fully reclined with leg support.
  • Durability – Look for springs in the seat and a strong construction. Some recliners are made from wood; but, the really sturdy recliners have steel construction.
